In Spanish this year, we will be progressing into tenses, irregular verbs, and more vocabulary.  The project we are working on currently is a telenovela, or Spanish Soap Opera, to work on sentence structure, noun and adjective agreement, and general pronounciation.  Below is the script of our telenovela.  Our group's telenovela is based off of the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but given a Mexican twist.  It is a classic boy meets girl story, but conclict between the parents of different ethnic backgrounds may disrupt the fluidity of the relationship.

Celebraciones-Carnaval

Period 1
The Spanish Carnaval
Carnaval is a very extravagant holiday that takes place all over the world.  There are generally many parades and festivities, accompanied with cultural peoples dancing or participating in other activities.  In Mexico, it is celebrated mainly in Veracruz and Mazatlan, but several other locations offer much smaller chances at celebrating Carnaval.  The holiday also pokes fun at certain people, such as politicians who may have made mistakes in their career, or even by calling the elected Carnaval King el Rey Feo, or Ugly King.

Carnaval’s main purpose is to get out everybody’s energy before they have to settle down and get serious about Lent.  Nearly all Catholics throughout the world participate in some form of Carnaval or another.  In the U.S., Carnaval is usually shortened and celebrated as Mardi Gras, beginning at the end of the traditional Carnaval and ending on Ash Wednesday.  Either way, Carnaval generally last for five days.  Some Carnaval celebrations even last for five days straight, going all day and night.
As said before, Carnaval is celebrated in many different ways in many different places.  Generally speaking, all celebrations have food, music, dancing and parades, but certain towns may have developed different cultural and/or demographic trends.  For example, the town of Mazatlan, which is a beach resort town, celebrates with more of an artsy feel, such as costume parades and art exhibits, whereas Veracruz, which is more of a bustling city, celebrates with more of an Afro-Caribbean feel that focuses mainly on music.
Traditional dancers in a parade
Carnaval celebrations throughout the world have lasted several generations, especially in the earlier colonized continents like Europe and Asia.  In Italy, Carnaval has dated back to 1268.  It started in Venice and was themed mainly as masquerade celebrations, which was a very controversial subject at the time.  At one point, Italy fell under Austria’s control, and all Carnaval celebrations were halted.  However, once Italy became independent of Austria, the celebrations took place once again.
Because Asia is such an ethnically diverse continent, few places celebrate the Catholic holiday.  Specifically, India celebrates Carnaval, calling it Goa instead of the traditional name.  Goa is only a three day celebration, and concentrates mainly on the historic aspects of Goa through plays and skits.  The actors in these plays are always boys, who are generally garbed in very colorful dresses,  following the example of the entire festival.
